How to Improve the Security of Your Home

According to the US Department of Justice, there are 2.5 million burglaries that happen annually. Even though these numbers are staggeringly high there’s no need to panic as there are plenty of ways to increase the security of your home. Burglars are opportunists and will actively seek out any openings they can take advantage of such as open or ajar doors, garages, and windows.

Don’t just leave it to chance. Here are some useful things you can do to improve the security of your home:

Check the garage

The number of burglaries that happen due to old, faulty, or low-quality garage door materials is on the rise. A strong and durable garage door such as an electric roller garage door is much harder to break into than traditional garage doors. Shopping around for a high-quality fitted garage door will not only mean that it lasts longer but it will also improve your home’s security. Electric rollers that open and shut automatically can prevent you from accidentally leaving your garage door open, giving you peace of mind that it’s fully shut.

Light up your home

Burglars do not want to be seen or heard. If they risk being seen by a neighbour or passer-by, then they will feel exposed and will move on to a less high-risk home. Security lights can be left near any entrances or openings such as near windows, doors, sheds, and garages. Security lights will detect movement and light up any high-risk areas to warn you of any activity happening around the property. You could even choose to leave your security lights on when leaving your property to make it look like someone is home.

Don’t overshare

Publicly sharing that you’re on holiday on social media and letting people know when you’re in and out of your home puts you at an incredibly high risk of a break-in. Sharing too much information with anyone, whether that’s with neighbours, taxi drivers, or on social media is putting you in danger of being burgled. Only telling a select few trusted people when you plan on leaving your home is the best way to keep it safe.

Sound the alarm

The loud high-pitched noises that come from setting off a burglar alarm is a great way to scare potential burglars away. As many as 60% of burglars are deterred by burglar alarm systems. Installing and ensuring that control panels, sensors, and sirens are all working will give you the extra security that your home needs. Alarms are particularly useful if you live in an isolated part of the neighbourhood as the noise should alert you of their presence.

Install cameras

Ring doorbells are increasingly popular for seeing who’s knocking at your door. Installing cameras all around the home can ensure that you can relax whilst you’re on holiday, or away from the house, as you can keep an eye on your property whilst it’s unattained. High-quality sharp video’s that record when they sense motion should be enough to deter burglars from entering the property.

As a homeowner, it’s your responsibility to ensure that you protect your home and ensure that it’s kept safe from potential hazards including break-ins. It’s always worth investing in security as it prevents you from being vulnerable.
