T.D.C: 3daysofdesign x Cult | Highlights

4 min read

With the world reopening and design fairs back in action, the Cult team travelled to both Milan and Copenhagen to reconnect with the brands they represent here in New Zealand and Australia. Following their coverage throughout (I have a particular soft spot for Copenhagen, and visited 3daysofdesign in 2017),  I’m excited to have teamed up with Cult to share some of my favourites from this year’s 3daysofdesign event.
Danish brand Karakter presented CO / WORK, a design exhibition curated by Ark Journal showcasing both iconic and new designs by Karakter. Impeccably styled by Pernille Vest, the exhibition centred around the interaction between home and work.

Alongside Karakter icons available from Cult, the exhibition presented three new designs. Comfortable and casual, the GB Lounge designed by Gijs Bakker in 1972 remains just as relevant today.  5-in-1 designed by Joe Colombo is a set of intertwining glasses that unite form with functionality, and the Heddles Throw designed by weaver and textile Artist Karin Carlander is made on a wooden hand-loom, bringing traditional Nordic craftsmanship into a modern context.

I had the pleasure of visiting &Tradition’s home in 2019, prior to the launch at Cult in NZ. During this year’s 3daysofdesign the Danish brand invited visitors into their home – a 20th century mansion in Central Copenhagen – to experience masterly design with personality. For the exhibition, entitled ‘The Home of &Tradition’, the Danish design company’s residence was transformed in close collaboration with Italian design studio, Studioutte into an expressive and dynamic space that demonstrates the diversity of its products.

Martin Kornbek Hansen, CEO and Founder of &Tradition said, “Our objective with The Home of &Tradition is to highlight the continuous dialogue between art and design. Through showcasing our collection in an experimental environment our intention is to emphasise the amount of time, care and craftsmanship that is at the core of each and every single one of our products. With this exhibition, we’re raising questions, exploring possibilities, and shining a new light on our range– all from the comfort of our own home.

At 3daysofdesign Fritz Hansen introduced its Anniversary Collection and the PK0 A™ chair and PK60™ coffee table by Poul Kjærholm. Released in specially curated and never-before-seen editions, the curved PK0 A is a functional sculpture and a seminal piece of modern design history, while the previously unreleased PK60 takes its design cues from modern art and combines talented craftsmanship with innovation.

During the event, Fritz Hansen also launched the Oneline pendant by Danish artist Kasper Kjeldgaard and featured a bespoke installation made by the artist. In addition to this, the exhibition presented some of the most recent designs launched in March 2022, and an exclusive preview of the collection, to be released in the latter half of this year. The gates to Vipp Garage opened during 3daysofdesign, adding another member to Vipp’s growing portfolio of design experiences. Located in the courtyard at the Vipp headquarters on Islands Brygge in Copenhagen, Architects Frank Maali & Gemma Lalanda have transformed the mid-century garage into a new cultural hub that can be adapted into accommodating different public events such as concerts, talks, art exhibitions, and supper clubs.

The brick ceiling by Randers Tegl is a homage to Holger Nielsen, who founded Vipp in 1939 in the city of Randers. The floors are made of polished, black concrete pebbles, and walls are clad in patinated dark steel plates. Meanwhile, a courtyard was cut through the existing structure to bring day light deep into the interior. A cherry on top –almost literally – is the rooftop terrace with a little “greenhouse” boasting a Vipp kitchen with views to Copenhagen’s skyline and harbour.

Vipp Garage opens with an art installation reimagining the artful dining table curated by interior designer, Julie Cloos Mølsgaard with help from concrete masters Pettersen & Hein and glass artist Alexander Kirkeby. With 24 custom Vipp chairs around the five meter wide round table, Vipp celebrated the Danish 3daysofdesign festival with an intimate supper club with renowned chef Christian Puglisi steering the Vipp kitchen.

In addition to the inspiring exhibitions, there were plenty of new product launches. Here are a few more of my picks, starting with news from one of my favourite Danish brands Fredericia

Calmo Elements

When Fredericia launched the Calmo sofa concept in 2019, it was to meet the need for individual solutions and personal interior design – both at home and in public spaces. A corner module for the series is now launched, increasing flexibility and offering numerous options.

Savannah Chair Petit
With a focus on craftsmanship, texture, and natural materials, Savannah invites with its open and inviting expression to a soft embrace. The lounge chair is launched in a new size with new upholstery that offers countless colour options depending on individual style.

Hans J. Wegner’s Ox Table

Imagined and designed as a sophisticated couple, Hans J. Wegner’s Ox Chair and Queen Chair form pairs, while Ox Table naturally ties the series together. Fredericia Furniture is now relaunching the associated table from 1960 in several new sizes. A classic Wegner piece of furniture in a simple design.

Piloti Alu

The Piloti Wood table was designed by Hugo Passos for Fredericia back in 2016, while in 2019, stones were added to the series. Now Piloti is also being launched in a robust and versatile aluminum frame that meets today’s flexible and long-lasting furniture requirements.

A beautiful new collection from Louis Poulsen

Louis Poulsen has introduced the Pale Rose editions to their iconic PH table and pendant lights. Inspired by Poul Henningsen’s fascination with colour and light, the PH Pale Rose collection is an elegant addition to any home.
And lastly, some pieces from Hay…

Anagram Table Lamp by Sam Weller

Paper Cube floor lamp by Bertjan Pot

Passerelle Table by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec
